RUSSIA RESUMES MASSIVE ATTACK ON KYIV AFTER U.S. PEACE ENVOYS DEPART KYIV — September 8, 2026 — GPC.NEWS Russia launched a large-scale missile and drone assault on Kyiv on Tuesday, killing at least three people and injuring 19, shortly after U.S. peace envoys Jared Kushner and Steve Witkoff left the Ukrainian capital. The attack ended a brief pause in strikes that had coincided with the American diplomatic mission aimed at reviving efforts to end the more than four-year war. Russian forces used a combination of ballistic missiles, cruise missiles and drones in what Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy described as a complex and particularly dangerous attack. Residential buildings were damaged across Kyiv, while a school, medical facility, warehouses and other civilian structures were also hit or damaged. Fires broke out in several areas as emergency crews searched affected buildings and treated the wounded. The assault extended far beyond the capital. Russian attacks were reported across eight Ukrainian regions, while drones struck a passenger train in the Sumy region. Passengers and crew had been evacuated after an air-raid warning before the train was hit. Ukraine's air defenses intercepted most of the incoming cruise missiles as well as two ballistic missiles, according to Ukrainian officials. However, Kyiv again warned that its supplies of advanced missile interceptors are under increasing pressure. The timing of the attack carries considerable political significance. Kushner and Witkoff had just completed talks in Kyiv after earlier meetings in Moscow as Washington attempts to restart negotiations between Russia and Ukraine. Zelenskyy said the U.S. representatives had presented several potentially useful ideas for ending the conflict, although no major breakthrough has yet been announced. Ukrainian Foreign Minister Andrii Sybiha said the renewed bombardment demonstrated the need for greater international pressure on Moscow and called on Ukraine's partners to provide additional air-defense interceptors. Russia maintains that its strikes are directed against military and logistics targets. Tuesday's assault nevertheless underscores the enormous gap that remains between renewed diplomatic efforts and conditions on the battlefield. With negotiations struggling to gain momentum and both sides continuing long-range attacks, the brief lull surrounding the American diplomatic mission has given way once again to full-scale warfare.
